Out of the many colleges and university what enticed to apply and come to Longwood?

I had heard about Longwood through a guidance counselor at my high school. I put it on the list to visit along with other big colleges in Virginia. When I visited I had a fantastic tour, and immediately fell in love with how small the school was…it gave me a great sense of family not just an education. I decided a big school was not a the best option for a undergraduate education. Throughout my time at Longwood I can proudly say my professors all knew me by name.

What made you decide to choose Communication Studies as your major and how did that lead you to your current job?

I chose Communication Studies and History as a double major.  Comm studies major you had to have a minor I declared as History, but since I had taken dual credit courses as a high school student it pushed me ahead in credit hours. I would still graduate one semester early with a double major so that’s what I chose to do, have them both as majors—it would open more options for my future after Longwood as well. I have a passion for history and comm studies, loved the curriculum and the professors!!!!

(Side note: I don’t think before me there had ever been a student who double majored and graduated in 3.5 years?? I know I was the only one in the c/o 2004—you see some students double major in 2 similar fields but not two opposite like history and comm.)

The education and experiences at Longwood have led me  to be employed with the City of Norfolk, where I use those comm studies skills day in and out. In addition, after completing a Master’s degree program in 2007, I became an adjunct history professor at three colleges.  I thoroughly enjoy both fields, therefore I choose to make two careers and use them both daily.

Longwood's campus has always been bustling with tons of clubs and organizations. What were you involved with during your time at Longwood?

Judicial Board, Longwood Ambassador, Omicron Delta Kappa, Leadership Honors Society, Phi Alpha Theta, History Honors Society, Lambda Pi Eta, Comm. Honors Society

Out of the millions of memories you made at Longwood, what is your favorite memory and what is your favorite memory you would like to relive.

My favorite memory was freshman move in day. They day I was going to be on my own from here on out--- away from home, total independence and a new place. It was such an exciting and overwhelming moment all at the same time.

Favorite memory to relive again and again was the feeling and thoughts I had on graduation day. Thinking, wow, it’s been such a great ride here at Longwood. Not only have I gained knowledge into my chosen career path, but how I have also grown as a young adult over those college years now about to enter the real world. It was one of the most surreal feelings of my life!

Traditions have changed over the years, what is one of your all-time favorite Longwood Tradition and why?

Midnight breakfast! You will never see D-hall so packed. Its only food, but it means so much to the students and they look forward to it. It’s my favorite because it brings students together unlike anything you will see in your college experience—and the only one circled around food!

If you have had the opportunity to return to Longwood, did you notice a difference in student life now and then?

Longwood was a construction zone during my years (2001-2004). I knew one day it would lead to great/positive changes, and that is what I have seen today as I go back to visit.  I’m jealous! The campus feels more residential in general, no cars driving through the middle of campus. New amenities, from remodeled dorms to an amazing gym, there is so much for students to do and enjoy on campus. Even the town of Farmville has added economic development with restaurants and shops which also enhance student life more today compared to 10 years ago.

Everyone has a favorite professor and a favorite class, what were yours?

Comm Studies Dept. :  Dr. B (RIP—will never forget you!), Pam and Naomi

History Dept. : Dr. Coles, Dr. Munson

ALL of their classes were my favorite; kudos and thank you to these amazing professors!

What was your favorite campus wide event that Longwood hosted?

Spring Weekend, WOW is all I can say. Awesome bands, your best friends, what could be more fun!

You are now a part of the Alumni board, what is your favorite aspect of being on it?

It is important I give back to the community that helped make me who I am today. As a new member of the board I look forward to getting young alumni to stay involved with Longwood after they graduate. My favorite aspect is learning about all the new changes going on at the university and sharing my stories and experiences with current  and perspective students.

With graduation right around the corner, what is some advice you can offer upcoming graduates before their departure from Longwood?

Do what you love, if there is a will there is a way! You will be more successful making a living out of it because there is a greater passion and drive.

Stay in touch. The past four years you have built relationships with your professors. Don’t leave that behind when you graduate carry it with you, and reach out for tips and advice.
